An historic night off the pitch, ended with disappointment on it, as Dave Diaper's 1000th game in charge of Sholing saw them slip to their first defeat of the season and go out the Wessex League Cup.
Sholing were without Ryan Gosney due to illness and everyone at the club wish him all the best. Nick O'Donnell made his debut between the sticks. Jack Smith, Owen Royl & Owen Roundell all returned to the starting line-up as the Boatmen played their first game at Tadley for some years.
An even first 20 minutes saw most of the game in midfield, but the first shot on target came from Sholing as Jake Hoole beat the left back and crossed towards the arriving Dan Mason who took the shot first time, but the keeper was well placed at his near post to gather. Soon after, Sholing should have scored when from a corner, the ball dropped to TJ only 2 yards out, but his air-shot, was a hint of what was to come.
The home side were not letting the Boatmen have time on the ball and it was from that pressure in midfield that Tadley took the lead on 39 minutes. A mix-up on the half way line allowed Brett Denham to win possession and run into space and deep into the Sholing half before hitting a low shot from just outside the area that found the bottom corner. HT 1-0
Nick O'Donnell did well to deny Denham on 53 minutes as Sholing struggled to work the Tadley goalkeeper, with efforts going over and wide by Sawyer and Dan Mason. Home side went close a couple more times and it wasn't until the final 15 minutes that Sholing started to look like their normal selves going forward as Marv Mclean came off the bench to play left wing. He immediately dropped the shoulder and beat the right back as he cut into the box and was tripped for a penalty. Dan Mason stepped up for the spot-kick, but O'Brien dived to his left to save and then smother the rebound.
Dan Miller rose highest at the far post from a corner, but headed it just wide of the upright. Then the ball fell to Marv who hit a goalbound side-foot effort that was cleared off the line and somehow put round the post by a defender. Boatmen ended the game with 10 men as Pete Castle was sent off in added time for a lunge from behind to sum up a poor night at the office for Sholing. FT 1-0
