Man of the Match : Byron Mason

Byron Mason hit a brilliant goal, but Sholing had to settle for a point in a keenly fought match at 4th place Hamworthy United.

Team News : Sholing were unchanged. On the bench was recent signing, Brandon Chebby, who along with playing for Follands & Hamble, the striker is also a full international with Burundi.  Hamworthy have done very well to be in 4th place this season, especially after losing their management team & several players to Wimborne. They boast an unbeaten home record also.

Game was brought forward an hour to allow everyone time to get home before the England match (sad face). Both sides had to wait until 45 mins before kick off before being able to warm up on the 3G pitch due to a youth team game taking place on it.

The sun took the chill off a cold day, although the temperature would plummet in the second half.  It was the only local game on, so there were a scattering of fans from Poole, Winchester & Wimborne in attendance, along with a few Wessex League managers.

Wasn't much goalmouth action to speak off in the early stages, Gosney had to make a couple of claims from crosses and had a routine save to make.  Home side were playing with high intensity, closing Sholing down quickly and it limited our play in the final third.

Was an early injury blow for Sholing, with Jake Cope coming off, Wayne Robinson replaced him.  Our first chance came on 24 mins, Owen Roundell's long throw into the box was flicked on by Dan Mason, but no one had gambled and the ball was cleared out the 6 yard box.   Lee Wort ran into space down the right flank, tried an early clipped effort, but it was a comfortable save for Scott.

Boatmen had a short spell of sustained pressure, a fierce shot by Byron was blocked and winded the Hamworthy player. Then Lee Wort beat a defender on the by-line, but his cut back was cleared.  A scramble in the Hamworthy box saw the ball sit invitingly for a shot, but no Sholing player could get a clean connection.

Our best chance came on 36 mins. Nice link up play between Dan Mason & Lee Wort, saw Wayne Robinson released down the right, his ball into the box fell to the arriving Brad Targett, whose shot into the ground bounced up, with the Hamworthy keeper taking two attempts to gather the ball under his crossbar.

It was Hamworthy's turn to have a spell of pressure before the break. A shot and a flicked header went narrowly wide and then Gos did well to get down to an effort that looked like it might sneek inside his near post.   HT 0-0

Boatmen broke the deadlock on 53 minutes with a goal to remember from skipper, BYRON MASON. The ball fell to him 25-30 yards out and he smacked a brilliant low drive that fizzed along the surface and beat the keeper all ends up inside his post.  Was By's 103 for the club and probably one of his best.

Hamworthy hit back, having a shot deflect inches wide and then equalising 6 minutes after we took the lead. A corner was punched out by Gosney, back to the taker, who had too much time to measure a cross to the far post where it was met with a header that hit the woodwork and fell to Remus Nixon to tap over the line.

Boatmen went back up the other end as the game opened up more. Dan Mason's low cross towards Robinson at the near post was saved by the feet of Scott. Then D-Dan headed the ball into the path of Lee Wort, who in space, dragged his first time shot across the keeper and wide.

Gosney had to make a double save, firstly parrying the ball and whilst he was on the deck, stretching to block a Hamworthy shot.   Owen Roundell was unfortunate to pick up a booking when he clearly made no contact with the player, who's scream was loud enough for the Referee to book Owzie.

The Hammers had a great chance to go in front with 10 mins to go, the ball being blazed over the bar from 10 yards.  Charlie Wagstaffe came on to replace Roundell for the closing moments.

Sholing had a chance of our own to take home the 3 points, Brad Targett's curling cross from the left flank was met with a header by Lee Wort, but he couldn't quite get over the ball and it cleared the crossbar. Overall, a fair result in the end, both sides keep their unbeaten records and Sholing are now 11 points clear at the top. FT 1-1

Dave Diaper : "Good close game today against Hamworthy United. Tough place to go and thought the draw was a fair reflection of the game. Good luck to Dan Cann in the upcoming games and thanks to Hamworthy for their hospitality"
